About The Company
The Philm Company was set up by commercials director Phil Hawkins and it's first foray into feature film making came in 2007 when Phil was approached to create a feature length adaptation of the classic greek play 'The Trojan Woman' for the educational sector. The film - 'The Women Of Troy' - went onto win Best Director at the New York Independent Film and Video Festival in 2008 and continues to be sold to schools, colleges and universities
Whilst continuing to direct television commercials, Phil wrote and directed the short film 'Commandeered' which he submitted for Steven Spielberg's television show 'On The Lot'. Phil was selected from over 12,000 submissions and became the only British director to appear on the show. The short film 'Please Hold' was produced by Philm Company to air on Fox Television for Dreamworks. Phil's work on the show was praised by Steven Spielberg who described him as one of "the best new and upcoming directors".
Landing back in the UK, Phil went straight onto direct his second feature film 'The Butterfly Tattoo' (produced by Dynamic Entertainment) based on the best selling novel by Philip Pullman, author of 'The Golden Compass'. After a festival run, the film picked up four awards at international festivals including Best Director (Phil's second win at the same festival) and two Best Film awards. The film had a limited theatrical release in the US in 2008 and a week after it's DVD release the film was illegally downloaded over 200,000 times. The Philm Company handled the UK limited theatrical release showing the film in eight cities before being sold on DVD. The film has also been sold to multiple territories around the world.
In mid 2010, Phil had the crazy idea of shooting a feature film in just two days and The Philm Company co-produced 'Being Sold' a comedy satire starring well known British actors and comedians. The film went onto win Best Film and Best Actor for it's lead
Christopher Dane at the London Independent Film Festival.
Former Warner Bros & 20th Century Fox sales executive Alexandra Baranska joined The Philm Company in 2012 and brings a wealth of knowlege in distribution and sales to the company and, alongside Phil's production experience, creates a very strong producing team.
Recently, The Philm Company has produced 'The Flying Lesson' an ambitious short involving air-to-air stunt sequences. It has successfully raised EIS finance for the $2m production 'The Last
Showing', a psychological thriller as well as an SEIS development fund. The film
is due to be released in 2014 around the world and was sold to major studio Sony in the UK. The film stars Robert Englund (Nightmare On Elm Street), Finn Jones (Game of Thrones), Emily Berrington (The White Queen) and Keith Allen (Shallow Grave).
In late 2014, Philm Flicks was launched to finance and produce a range of high quality genre led films for the sub £1m budget. 'The Four Warriors' written by and starring Christopher Dane went into production. The action adventure family movie also features Kristain Nairn (Hodor from Game Of Thrones). It is currently in post-production and selling strongly at worldwide markets through our partners Metrodome International.
The Philm Company is now in pre-production on Baptism, an action thriller based on the critically acclaimed novel by Max Kinnings.
